Yaw Sarpong Dies at 66: Ghana Mourns Gospel Music Legend

Ghana’s gospel music community and music lovers across the country are mourning the death of legendary gospel musician Yaw Sarpong.

The veteran musician, best known as the frontman of the Asomafo group, reportedly passed away on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at Emena Hospital in Kumasi. His death was confirmed by his longtime manager, Nana Poku Ashis.

Yaw Sarpong’s death brings an end to a music career that lasted for almost five decades. Over the years, he became one of the important figures in Ghanaian gospel music and played a major role in the growth of contemporary Akan gospel.

His music was known for its strong messages about faith, hope, perseverance and the power of God. Through his songs, Yaw Sarpong spoke about the challenges people face in life while reminding listeners to continue trusting in God.

Many of his songs were delivered in Twi and connected with listeners from different generations. Songs such as “Awurade Kasa” and “Wo Haw Ne Hwan” became memorable works in Ghanaian gospel music and have continued to be enjoyed by fans over the years.

Yaw Sarpong also developed a sound that became closely associated with the Asomafo group. His music often featured rich harmonies, backing vocals, guitars and steady percussion, creating the soulful gospel sound that his fans came to know.

Unlike the faster style that later became popular in gospel music, Yaw Sarpong remained committed to a more traditional and mid-tempo sound. His ability to combine meaningful lyrics with strong musical arrangements helped his songs remain relevant for many years.

His music journey dates back to the early 1980s, with his debut album Adesrede released in 1981. From that period, he continued to build a successful career and became a respected name in Ghana’s gospel music industry.

The passing of Yaw Sarpong also comes shortly after the death of Maame Tiwaa, also known as Adwoa Tiwaa, who was a respected backing vocalist and an important member of the Asomafo group. Her death in December 2025 was another painful loss for the gospel community.

Maame Tiwaa had been closely connected to Yaw Sarpong and had supported him through some of his recent health challenges. Their work together produced several memorable songs that remain popular among gospel music lovers.

Yaw Sarpong had also faced health challenges in recent years, including a stroke and other complications. Despite these difficulties, he remained an important figure in Ghana’s music industry.

In 2025, the legendary musician was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards, recognizing his contribution to Ghanaian music and his long-standing career.

Following news of his death, tributes have been coming from musicians, industry personalities and fans. Several well-known Ghanaian artistes, including Sarkodie, Diana Hamilton and Sonnie Badu, have joined many others in remembering the late gospel icon.

Fans have also been sharing his songs and memorable performances on social media as they celebrate his life and music. His old songs continue to receive attention from both longtime listeners and a younger generation discovering his work.

Yaw Sarpong’s journey before becoming a celebrated musician has also attracted renewed interest, including stories about his early days as a taxi driver before his music career grew.

With a career spanning almost five decades, Yaw Sarpong leaves behind a catalogue of songs that have played an important role in Ghanaian gospel music. His music brought messages of faith and encouragement to many people and helped establish a sound that remains part of Ghana’s musical history.

The death of Yaw Sarpong is a major loss to Ghana’s gospel music fraternity. However, his music and the message he shared through his songs will continue to live on among the many people who grew up listening to him.

May the soul of Yaw Sarpong rest in peace.
